Robert West, convicted in 1938 for murdering his sweetheart, spent two years on death row before his execution.

Early in our investigation, we made contact with a Robert. But in the final half hour, he returned for our Estes: as an orb, setting off cat balls, and channeling intense anger through Swan.

First and foremost, a huge thank you to Shelly for always welcoming us back to the Big Red House. It was such a pleasure leading the investigations downstairs in the gangster bar. What a night at the Old Baraboo Inn!

To everyone who showed up and took part in this event, thank you. We hope the teams who volunteered were able to open your minds the same way BC did when we first stepped through those doors.

And finally, the biggest thank you goes to the spirits of OBI. Your stories live on forever! Without your footsteps across the floors of this 161-year-old building, we wouldn’t have the stories or the energy that make this place what it is. You could choose to haunt, but instead, you choose to laugh and have a drink, and that’s something truly beautiful to us. (BC, we know you’re the life of the party with them.)

Here’s another one for the books; to Capone, the cowboys, the gangsters, the girls, the owners who never left, and the countless spirits still sitting at the bar beside us.

A devoted spiritualist named Morris Pratt once shook hands with a healing witch, and together they created a moment that would outlast time.

In 1880, Pratt vowed that if he ever came into money, he’d devote his life to spiritualism. During a séance in the Lake Mills/Whitewater area, he met Mary Hayes-Chynoweth. She promised that if his word was true, she’d make it happen. In 1886, she led her kin to land rich in Bessemer ore… and they all became wealthy overnight.

In 1888, Pratt laid the foundation for the Morris Pratt Institute for Spiritualism in Whitewater. Though he passed before it opened, others carried on his dream. Students came from across the country to study spiritualism and psychic culture. Locals called it the “Spook Temple.”

And the best part? The once-school stood in the heart of the Whitewater Triangle. And in its third cemetery, Hillside, you’ll find Morris Pratt’s final resting place.

We originally went there to talk about his legacy.
But something else was waiting for us.

In the 1880s, the Horan family moved to a quiet corner of the country, one that would not remain ordinary for long. Within just two years of living inside the Whitewater Triangle, tragedy began to unfold. It began when Nellie Horan’s mother died unexpectedly. Then, another family member died. And another. One by one, they all fell... until only Nellie remained.

When the final sibling, Anna, passed under suspicious circumstances, the coroner discovered traces of strychnine in her stomach. Nellie was arrested, accused of systematically poisoning her entire family over the course of four grim years. But the jury set her free. No conviction. No justice.

She went on to marry. Lived out her days. Died of natural causes.

But the most unsettling detail? Out of what some call arrogance (or perhaps something darker), Nellie was buried in Calvary Cemetery, in a plot beside the very family she was believed to have murdered.

Was she a grieving sister… or a cold-blooded killer who got away with it?
